Men’s Fashion Rules It’s Okay to Break

There are numerous men’s fashion rules that have been established over the decades which are viewed by some as sacrosanct and therefore never to be broken. In many instances there are good reasons for such rules as they prevent total fashion disasters and ward away unwary males from poor fashion decisions. However, as the old adage goes, rules are meant to be broken: if not broken, to be bent at the very least. By bending such rules a man can establish his own unique style and distinguish himself from every other man walking the earth today.

Matching shoes and belt

There is a long-held theory that shoes and belts should be of matching colours. For instance, if black shoes are worn the belt should be black also. However, the focus should be less on matching colours and more on coordinating colours.

While matching colours generally do work well, choosing colours that complement each other can be equally as effective. For example, when wearing a bolder and more daring colour of shoe it would be perfectly acceptable to wear a belt that is more neutral in colour.

Trousers covering ankles

While it is certainly true that on formal occasions the trouser hem should sit just above the heel, on many other occasions this is simply not necessary. Showing a little bit of sock or ankle can look good if done correctly. However, if this is done when wearing a suit the result can be a total disaster.

Rolling up trouser legs somewhere between an inch and an inch and a half is all it takes to achieve this look. However, when wearing higher rising shoes this can be taken a little further.

Avoiding a clash of dark colors

Traditional reasoning states that dark, neutral colours such as black, brown, and navy blue should not be combined. Instead, the reasoning goes, items of clothing should match in their colour throughout. However, it is possible to tastefully combine these colours without appearing to be uncoordinated.

It is a well-known fact that black goes with just about anything and brown and navy blue are no exception. By using difference skins or fabrics as well as different colours the wearer can tone down the contrast in colours that they are wearing. This is particularly true in formal men’s fashion where traditional logic would have it that brown shoes could never be worn with a black suit. However, well-polished suede or leather brown shoes can look superb with a black suit.

It is important to remember, however, that men's fashion rules have come to fruition over time for good reason. They do provide good general guidance on what works and what does not. For this reason, such rules should be bent but not broken altogether. Moreover, for those who are not so adventurous or who are not prone to fashion successes perhaps it would be best to keep to the established rule.
