Brain vs Facebook

Brain extends with Facebook friend list

According to a new study, some space in the brain tend to expand in individuals who have a larger number of friends on social networking site like Facebook friend list. The news seemed to bring happiness to fb user who are usually criticized for spending most of their day time on Facebook, especially teenagers. However, previously, the study, which was published in “Proceedings of the Royal Society B”, wasn’t able to address the query as to whether or not becoming friends with people on Facebook fattens the brain areas or those individuals who have solidity in brain physiology happen to be socially active in a natural manner. One of the study’s  researchers, Ryota Kanai of UCL, University College London said that the previous study of the team on Facebook was able to reveal a relationship between the size of social network and the brain but added further, saying that they could not find out how the two were related, which means that they were not successful in determining the way the social brain regions and size of social network was related.

However, according to the newest study, published in Science’s 4th November issue, there is support to the claim. The study took into account 23 macaques and studied these macaques and the set number were either assigned to live separately, single, or get accompanied by a friend or live in groups. It turned out that monkeys who were living in larger groups had a larger gray matter in the areas of their brain which was connected to the processing of information gathered on the social networking site. These areas of the brain include amygdala, middle-superior temporal sulcus, rostral pre-frontal cortex and these identified areas of the brain were also sported by the study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The details of the research can be studied in the 4th November issue of Science. Whatever the results are, teenagers will be gloating as they have some sort of proof to support their justification of spending more time on Facebook.
