Johnny Depp Gives New Take On Being A Vampire In Dark Shadows
There’s a new vampire in town – Hollywood, that is. Johnny Depp’s “Dark Shadows” vampire is quite different from those seen in the “Twilight” movies and “The Vampire Diaries.” Of course, the movie is directed by Tim Burton and he’s known for his drastic, dramatic, and sometimes downright scary characters. “Dark Shadows” is based upon a book by Seth Grahmae-Smith,
who is also responsible for “Zombies,” Vampire Killer,” and “Abraham Lincoln.” Back in the 1960s, “Dark Shadows” was a soap opera and its main vampire was Barnabas Collins. Depp’s movie is based upon this series and Barnabas Collins is Depp’s character. The series ran from 1966 to 1971 and the look that Burton has envisioned for Barnabas is very pale, with long, pointed fingernails, and pointy, slicked back hair. Depp is almost unrecognizable.
Burton spoke about the post-production phase of making “Dark Shadows,” saying that while there is a small sense of the world in the movies, it’s really all about the drama inside the family. He said, "finding the right mood for the character was very much important to me and was often one of the most difficult task to accomplish with “Dark Shadows.”" A cast shot was most helpful, because it gave the actors and actresses a chance to get a real feel for the mood, tone, and vibe of the movie. None of the cast was on the set at the same time, so it was important that everyone was on the same page, according to Burton.
Depp’s co-star is Helena Bonham Carter and she’s a favorite of Burton’s. In addition, the movie cast includes Eva Green, Jonny Lee Miller, and Chloe Mortez. It’s due to hit theaters on May 11 and with the craze that vamps are bringing to the theaters, as well as the commercial appeal of Johnny Depp, this movie will likely be in the top spot for its debut.
