Paracetamol: Relieving Pain or Causing New Problems?

Taking paracetamol daily can be fatal for a person. It is worse than the people who try to commit suicide by taking massive overdose of these pills because the effect is fatal and sometimes life taking. Professor Roger Knaggs of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society said that patients should be aware of this problem. If they see that paracetamol is not working on their pain then

before thinking about a high power pain killer they need to consult to an expert who can help them. Because taking too much paracetamol does not help a patient to control his/her pain but damage their health.

This warning comes out from the expert after the researchers at Edinburgh University saw 161 cases of “staggered overdose” at its hospital over a six-year period. Doctors might not understand it at the first time they are observing the patient because blood test does not show it if not the patient swallowed several packets of the drug. So it becomes impossible for them to find out if they did not go through the medication history of a particular person.

It can cause liver damage which can not be recognized or realized before the actual problem happened. Then the patients only have to wonder that what actually happens to them and the reason behind it. But not only liver problems but brain problems and breath complications can be caused by this overdose issue. The 161 cases the researchers observed needed kidney dialysis and other helps and most of them died for their complications.

Scientists are working for finding out a way which can work as paracetamol but in a less toxic way as they find out the way of paracetamol working in the human body, via a protein on nerve cells called TRPA1. They are hoping that it will effectively work on the pain without causing any serious health problems.
