Hong Kong Wife Paid $154 Million Divorce Settlement

Florence Tsang Chiu-wing left the courtroom with a big smile on her face last Thursday after a judge in Hong Kong ordered her ex-husband to pay her $154 million. It’s one of the largest divorce settlements in the world and the largest ever in Hong Kong. Just for comparison, Heather Mills, who was once married to Paul McCartney, was ordered to pay $50 million less than three years ago. The ruling by the judge is not all cash. There are two homes involved. The home in Hong Kong is worth $32 million and the home in London is worth about $3.9 million. There’s also a generous allowance of a little over $320,000 to purchase two cars.

The woman married Samathur Li Kin-kan in 2000. Eight years later, they separated. The lifestyle the two lived was comparable to that of a billionaire in the United States. There was a lot of media coverage on the divorce case. Li is the son of Samual Lee Tak-yee, who is a real estate billionaire.

Li, at one point in the marriage, owned 28 cars, two yachts, and a jet. The marriage apparently went south after Tsang ended up pregnant. According to court document, Li wanted his wife to have an abortion and she refused. He testified in court that his wife had tricked him into getting her pregnant. He also admitted that since she had gotten pregnant, he had only seen her twice. When his wife discovered he was having an affair, she filed for divorce.

Li and his father filed a lawsuit against Tsang for a post-nuptial agreement they say she had broken. The two men filed the case in London and then refiled it again in Hong Kong. They lost that case, as well, and now, Tsang is a very wealthy woman.
