France Considers Afghan Pullout after Deaths of Soldiers
France team has been training Afghan national troops in order to prepare them to take over as there country’s main security force when existing NATO forces withdraw. However, after killed four French soldiers on Friday, France is considering pulling out all of its troops. There are currently about 4,000 French troops in Afghanistan. This latest attack is one of the deadliest for France since the Afghan war started ten years ago. There have been 82 French soldiers killed in Afghanistan
and Nicolas Sarkozy, the president of France, said that for the time being, all combat help and training from France is suspended.
Sarkozy said that an early withdrawal from Afghanistan will be considered if the conditions of security are not restored to a level that is acceptable by France. He said that French soldiers are not in Afghanistan for Afghan soldiers to shoot at. They are in the country in order to help the Afghans fight terrorism and the Taliban. The deaths of the French troops happened on the same day as six U.S. Marines were killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. It does not appear that the helicopter crashed because of enemy fire, but the details of the crash have not been released. The crash happened in a remote area of Afghanistan, but one that has been the site of a lot of fighting. The crash was the deadliest since last August when 30 U.S. troops were killed when their Chinook helicopter was shot down by the Taliban. Seventeen of t hose troops were members of the U.S. Navy Seal team that was responsible for the death of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan last May.
The United States is supposed withdraw its troops from Afghanistan in 2014. They just ended the war in Iraq and withdrew their troops from there in last month.
