Tainted Heart Drugs Claim 100 Lives In Pakistan

The Pakistani health ministry said that more than 100 people have died from what is believed to be tainted heart medications. The victims lived in or near Lahore, which is located in eastern Pakistan. The manufacturing plant that the government believes to be responsible for making the medicine has been shut down. According to the doctor in charge of the investigation, Dr. Javed Akram, the medicine may have been contaminated during manufacturing with heavy metal. The combination of the heavy metal and the medicine creates a deadly drug reaction.The medication was provided to people at no charge from the Pakistan government. It was part of a program ran by the Institute of Cardiology, which is run by the government. The victims have been arriving at the hospital in very bad shape, as their symptoms start with little notice. The levels of platelets and white blood cells drop very quickly, which causes the body to bleed for all orifices.

There are more than 200 patients in hospitals all over Lahore, including Mayo, General, Jinnah, Services, and Ganga Ram hospitals. The death toll may be much higher than what the media and the government is aware of because more than 46,000 patients were given the medicine. Many became ill and died at home. There are allegations that the hospitals could be trying to cover up additional deaths, according to some of the media in Pakistan. Several family members have said that they have not been able to get their loved one’s death certificates and that others were discharged while they were still very ill. The ownership of the manufacturing factory has been difficult to ascertain. There are some indications that a member of a PML-N parliament is the real owner of Mega Pharmaceuticals, while the owner on all the paperwork is actually someone else.
