Honduras Jail Fire

Honduras Jail Fire

Though the people were prisoners but what happened in Honduras were really shocking and dreadful. At least 350 people died during a fire in the Comayagua jail. The flames started on late Tuesday night and spread in the prison. It was remarked as one of the worst prison fires ever in Latin America. The fire took more than one hour to take control and local media reported that the chief of Comayagua fire department also died in the incident.
Comayagua is about 75 kilometers north of the capital Tegucigalpa. The jail was housing more than 850 inmates while the fire broke out. Families of the prisoners were desperate for the news of their relatives. But the local authority was unable to make sure any news of them. As per the Chief Hector Mejia there were 457 survivors outside the prison.

The reason of the fire is suspected as any electrical failure. But nobody can get inside as there is a chance of gunshots though head of the prison system, Daniel Orellana ensures that there was no riot. Most of the prisoners died trapped in their cell and burned to death. Other dies because of suffocation. The survivors get through this because they jumped from the building by pushing the roof panels though many were still missing. Relative of the missing prisoners were getting restless so they start protesting. Police fired shots in the air and tear gas at the protesters to control the crowd. But not only the electrical failure they have another hypothesis about the fire. They are also suspecting that there is a chance that a prisoner may set fire to a mattress to get an escape chance.
