Swedish man survived in snowed-in car for two months:
A Swedish man is very fortunate to be alive and for his doctors, he’s nothing short of a miracle. The 44 year old man has spent the last two months in his car, which was buried in the snow. A pair of snowmobilers found what they thought was a wrecked vehicle. After they dug down through a foot of snow, they were surprised to find a man asleep in a sleeping bag. The man, who is thought to be Peter Skyllberg, only had snow to eat to stay hydrated. He stayed warm in weather that
dropped to -30°C (-22°F) because of his warm clothing and a sleeping bag. Skyllberg told doctors that he had been stuck in his vehicle since December 19. He was able to communicate, but is very emaciated. Doctors believe that he lasted about as long as humanly possible without food.
The “igloo effect” is believed to have served as a bit of protection from the extreme temperatures. If the man had not been able to preserve his body temperature, he would have died. Stefan Branth, a doctor who treated Skyllberg, said that he might have survived because his body went into a type of hibernation. It would be somewhat similar to how a bear survives the winter months without food or water when hibernating. Another physician, Dr. Segerberg, said that he is somewhat skeptical of that idea.
Dr. Segerberg said that the human body cannot survive long with its body temperature lowered. As a person’s body temperature falls, he or she will fall unconscious and into a coma. Dr. Segerberg said that the case is unusual and that there is certainly something special about Skyllberg’s case. Skyllberg does not remember exactly how he became stranded on that deserted lane, but he does know that he is very grateful to his rescuers and his hospital staff.
